Local Medical Outreach
In order to best leverage GMR’s limited resources to reach as many underserved communities as possible, GMR also collaborates with other local non-profit groups in Guyana to launch outreach medical missions across the country. These groups include Guyana Cancer Society (GCS), the Central Islamic Organization of Guyana (CIOG), Food for the Poor ( FFTP). Other partners/volunteers engaged in these missions include Humanitarian Assistance Program of the U.S. Embassy, The Davis Hospital Dental and Jagan Dental School, as well as doctors, nurses and support personnel.
Past Medical Outreach Missions:
Moraikabai - Moraikabai is an Amerindian village about 95 miles up the Mahaicony river. GRM has arranged several medical outreach missions to the village over the years. In addition to medical services, they are also provided with donated personal care items, and Guyana Cancer Society also does VIA screening and PAP smears.
Marbaruma – Mabaruma is an isolated village in Region 1 (close to Venezuela border) with an indigenous population of Warrau people and other Guyanese, as well as immigrants from Venezuela. Due to the distance from Georgetown and major hospitals or clinics, the medical services offered through the outreach is very appreciated.
Independence Day – Georgetown - This outreach served to bring relief to the poorer and needier sections of Georgetown in areas like Sophia, La Penitance, Tiger Bay, Ruimveldt and around the Market areas in Georgetown. There was a very high attendance and we have conducted this outreach twice, and plan to continue to do so annually.
Lethem - In 2023, GMR was able to co-sponsor an outreach to Lethem in Region 9 and the furthest away from Georgetown. A variety of medical services were provided to 262 persons, including Pediatrics, OBGYN, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Physiotherapy, Orthopedics and Dental.
