International Outreach

Some of the recent missions by international organizations that we are engaged with are:

CanGo

Canada Guyana Outreach Mission

CanGo is a non-profit group based in Canada that has been leading annual medical missions to Guyana since 2014, providing services through a volunteer medical team across several disciplines from Canada, USA and Guyana . 

Staffing:  Volunteers from Canada, USA and a few local, comprised of 7 – 10 doctors including Family Physicians, Psychiatrist, Developmental Pediatrician, Pediatrician/Allergist, Gynecologist, Dentist, and Pulmonologist/Internal medicine, a well as Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, nursing students and Pharmacist.  Dr. Lloyd Stoll, Vice President of GMR, provided dental services on the missions in 2018 and 2019.

Patients served: 2016 = 773 patients 2017 = 860 patients

2018 = 1,227 patients. 2019  = 944 patients

Health Concerns Encountered:

Respiratory tract infections, diabetes, hypertension, skin rashes, tuberculosis, back pain, worms, asthma, abdominal pain, diarrhea, UTI, vaginitis, seizures, STDs, typhoid, conjunctivitis, and GERD. The teams were able to make specific recommendations for treatment in the community, and referrals were made for additional treatment to the appropriate health facility.

  • CanGo is a non-profit group based in Canada that has been leading annual medical missions to Guyana since 2014, providing services through a volunteer medical team across several disciplines from Canada, USA and Guyana .  GMR has provided financial sponsorship and medical supplies (through DR) for these missions since 2016.  Our Chief Operating Officer, Sharir Chan, is very engaged in facilitating the logistics of these missions on the ground in Guyana.

    Mission Focus:  These medical outreach missions are primarily focused on reaching the underserved indigenous Amerindian population in outlying areas.  Continuing Medical Education training was also provided at Georgetown Hospital to the Pediatrics and Psychiatry resident training group.  GMR also arranged the distribution of hundreds of shoes donated by TOMS Shoes  to the school-age children during the medical outreaches.

    Location of Clinics:  Most of the outreach efforts occur in Regions 1 and 2.  Some of the villages where clinics were held are Waracabra for patients from Karawab and St. Monica and at the Kabakaburi Health Post.  Kumaka District Hospital in Santa Rosa, the Waramuri Health Centre, Manawarin Health Centre and at the Oscar Joseph District Hospital in Charity.  Clinic was also held at the New Amsterdam School for Special Needs children in Berbice, they consulted on patients at the Ptolemy Reid Centre and saw patients at Project DAWN in Liliendaal near Georgetown.

GMM

Guyana Medical Mission

Guyana Medical Mission (GMM) is a non-profit organization in New Jersey with a mission of providing comprehensive clinical care and health education in an effort to improve the well-being of underserved communities in Guyana. 

Staffing:  Comprised of 8 – 10 surgeons, medical doctors (both international and local volunteers), Ophthalmologist, respiratory technicians, nurse practitioners, Operating Room and other nurses, pharmacist, pharmacy technicians, lab technicians and other medical professionals and support staff.

Patients Served:  Over 2,600 & conducted 65 – 75 surgeries.

Health Issues Encountered:  Diabetes, hypertension,

General surgery: hernia repairs, colon resections, thyroidectomies and laparoscopic cholecystectomies.

Gynecological: hysterectomies, caesarians, and D & Cs. 

Urology: Performed by President of GMR Dr. Scott, including Cystoscopy, Endoscopic Urethrotomy, Open Ureterolithotomy and  Pylelithotomy of the Left Kidney.

  • Guyana Medical Mission (GMM) is a non-profit organization in New Jersey with a mission of providing comprehensive clinical care and health education in an effort to improve the well-being of underserved communities in Guyana.  It was co-founded by Dr. James T. Cort and Dr. Berman O. Saunders (now deceased), and Dr. Cort continues to lead annual medical missions to Guyana with a team of volunteer medical personnel.  GMR began a relationship with GMM in 2018 and has been providing financial sponsorship annually since then for their outreach missions.  GMR’s President, Dr. Michael Scott is one of the Trustees of GMM, and also volunteers his surgical skills on those missions.

    Mission Focus:  The annual medical outreach missions focus on providing a wide range of clinical care and surgeries to underserved communities along the coast of Guyana, in collaboration with local hospitals to get access to surgical facilities and for follow-up care with local doctors.

    Location of Clinics: The clinics have been conducted in Mibicuri, Black Bush Polder,  Fryish Village,  Lancaster Village, Belladrum, Manchester, Mahaica, Betterverwagting, Buxton, Mahaicony, Rose Hall, East Canje, and Georgetown.  Surgeries have also been conducted at New Amsterdam and West Demerara hospitals.
