Shipments to Hospitals in Guyana

Since its inception, Guyana Medical Relief have been committed to providing Medical Supplies and Equipment to a number of Hospitals in Guyana with the fundamental goal of supporting Guyanese in Guyana by assisting in reducing the overall Healthcare costs in our birth land.

The hospitals that are direct recipients of shipments of medical supplies and equipment emanating from GMR’s effort are:

  • Linden Hospital -  Bartica Hospital  - Suddie Hospital -  Mahaicony Hospital
  • St. Joseph Mercy -  New Amsterdam Hospital   -  Davis Memorial Hospital  - Port Mourant

GMR’s primary partner that helps it to achieve its goals is Direct Relief International (DRI).  We are also proud to receive support from wide a range of caring individuals hailing from Guyana, other parts of the Caribbean as well as a number of non-Guyanese and non-Caribbean supporters throughout North America.

Stemming the Tide - Key Points

  • A program run by St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, to diagnose, treat and care for persons living with HIV/AIDS.
  • It is free and has no governmental funding.
  • Emphasis on testing pregnant women to prevent transmission of the disease from mother to child

St. Joseph Mercy Mobile Clinic - Key Points:

  • Provides local communities with free medical services to low or no-income families
  • 2007 was the 11th Anniversary of this service and need keeps growing.
  • Supported by donations – operating on a deficit supported by Mercy Hospital
  • 90% of patients served earn less than G$13,000 p.a. = US$66. Remaining 10% earn less than G$25,000 p.a. = US$126

Deskan Medical Mission - Key Points:

  • Deskan Institute and Training, Inc. – a non-profit organization in Atlanta, led by Guyanese – Dr. Joan Liverpool.
  • 2007 marked the 5th Volunteer Medical and Training missions to Guyana.
  • Preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS/STD/TB and new infections was one of the most important objectives for this fifth mission.

Past Projects

  • Over the years, GMR partnered with a number of other organizations whose missions were synergistic, some of these organizations include:
  • S.E.E. International - partnership in three medical missions resulting in a minimum of 50 cataract removal surgeries in each mission
  • Volunteer Youth Corp. - Outreach program focusing on counseling in the prevention of HIV and AIDS.
  • Infrastructure programs - adding X-Ray facility; Mortuary freezer and other infrastructure support activities.
